Last wasted words about packs
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
I can promise to everybody that this
is my last (and first) article about
packs. I think it's a typical topic
of guys, who have no fantasy. Anyway,
as I make packs, and as I read those
unlimited discussions about pack
protection in Stolen Data and as I got
more and more packs day by day, I want
to close down this topic with an
article. Otherwise I asked the public
about packs in the "today's question"
so check that file, too!
First of all let's see the reasons of
packmaking:
1. to earn empty disks
2. to fill a disk with stuff and not
sending only one short file
3. for spreading your groups's name,
very typical for unproductive groups
I think those things are the most
importants. The first two reasons are
in close relationship, because there
are many guys sending short files on
disk, so it's logical to copy them
together. But it works "vice versa"
too. Got what I mean?
Here we've reached the question of
pack protection. I'd like to answer
to the guys in Stolen Data with the
forthcoming few sentences. So, you
all forgot one thing when you cried
about "pack-ripping". What happens if
YOU spread a production? Do you send
a 40kb intro, 2kb text, 2kb type and
nothing else? I usually make a pack,
packing my own prod. together with
other fresh stuffs and with that
system I never send a nearly empty
disk. And I ask my contacts to ripp
my packs, because I want my stuff to
appeare everywhere. On the other
hand, tastes are different. I try to
make a pack with HOT and NICE
productions (both are important!) but
I'm sure that some of my contacts
wouldn't like all of the stuffs. As
most of packmakers make their
collections for themselves, too, they
don't want to waste disks for ugly
intros, demos. As you see ripping is
also logical for that reason. To make
a cool pack from 5 avarage ones. But
before you think, that I'm totally
with the rippers I want to make one
thing clear! If anybody just ripp all
the files and put his loader, text
before them, it's really lame. If you
don't want to change the contents, why
don't you spread the pack you got? -I
should advice them. All we know that
beginners have no other possibility
than ripping packs, if they don't have
productive contacts. But as they got
only a few, old packs, I don't care
about it. In summon, I don't think
that pack-ripping is a big crime
against the maker and I think that
until there will be intros and
filedemos (I don't mean 800kb
filedemo) packs must exist.
Now let's see, how do packs like?
there are several kind of packs:
1. ansi packs
2. bootloaders
3. short file loaders
4. long pack (mainly because of the
long music)
5. packs which are more like diskmags
The first type I really like and I
made ansi packs for a very long time.
They boot very fast and you can fill
up the disk with products and not with
loader, scroll etc...
Bootloaders are really out of style,
but groups without skilled coders
still use them. Very unconfortable
system. The third is my favourite
kind of pack. With a short chiptune
and without useless files (messages,
news, contact-list, address-list,
articles.. Simple and cool designed.
The other side of the coin is that
there are many intros without exit
nowadays! Before a game, eh?
Tn the last two cases makers forget
the function of a loader. If they
want to show us their skill, why don't
they code a demo? Messages and long
scrolls aren't very good idea in a
pack, because mainly there's no time
to write long texts.
Well, what else about packs? I'm very
bored, so I finish this article!
Hmmmm... And I think I put together a
pack!
